Georgia College & State University Andalusia Interpretive Center
Georgia College & State University wanted to preserve author Flannery O’Connor’s Andalusia homestead, which served as inspiration for many of her works. They reached out to our team to help create an interpretive center for the site.
The main lobby welcomes guests with a historic, larger-than-life mural of O’Connor, setting the stage for the experience ahead. From there, visitors can easily navigate through an open-concept foyer to the adjacent bookstore and exhibit room, where educational programs, guided tours, and cultural events bring together locals and visitors.
For the lobby and main exhibit room, we incorporated a modest palette of white walls, concrete floors, and wood accents. A bold, peacock-colored bespoke illustration of the author serves as a focal point, drawing visitors toward the bookstore and gift shop.
We designed a large, glazed partition to separate the exhibit room from the climate-controlled collection storage area, safeguarding archival materials with precise environmental controls. Mobile shelving units rotate seamlessly between storage and public display, allowing the curators to showcase diverse themes while offering visitors a behind-the-scenes look at their work.
The exhibit room’s flexible design allows it to adapt for large-scale college events and community gatherings. Permanent exhibits line the room’s perimeter, complemented by movable display cases for temporary programs and a video wall for presentations.
