Providing integral project management services to design a facility for premium care
Throughout its more than 50 year-history, the University of Pennsylvania’s hospital building has undergone numerous renovations. Today, they were taking two existing operating rooms and combining them into a 1,200 square foot hybrid OR for the Department of Perioperative Services—without impinging on nearby active ORs.
The team’s project managers coordinated the renovation while within a sterile core perimeter, synchronizing ICRA level 4 parameters and scheduling required MEP system shutdowns during night hours. These measures kept care constant and maintained project timelines.
With this design, physicians are able to perform multiple procedure types for both neurosurgery and spinal surgery cases. The new OR features two Siemens tables, an observation/control room, and a series of newly-advanced equipment such as large TV display booms, navigation cameras, LED surgical lights, navigation touch screens, and x-ray shields. The plan also included additional central sterile storage space and a new equipment room.
Our team used 3D modeling to help the surgeons imagine the space and engage in a collaborative planning process. That meant we could proactively design the project with innovative strategies, placing this new OR at the forefront of modern surgery techniques.
