Metropolitan’s Pure Water Southern California

Creating a stable new source of water from wastewater

Pure Water Southern California will be to this century what the aqueducts of California’s State Water Project were in the last

Persistent droughts and other stressors on the Colorado river basin are threatening the stability and long-term reliability of Southern California’s water sources. One solution? To build infrastructure that reuses wastewater to create a new source of reliable water for generations to come.

Pure Water Southern California (PWSC) represents a generational shift in Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s (Metropolitan) approach to drinking water supply. Through Metropolitan’s partnership with the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, this project will create a sustainable water future that balances local water resources with imported supplies from the Colorado River.

We’ve been working with Metropolitan on this program since 2010, when we completed the Joint Groundwater Replenishment Study that laid this foundation. Over the last six years, our team has helped Metropolitan define the current configuration of PWSC and its major program elements including the design of the Advanced Purification Center (APC) demonstration facility as well as our current work as their environmental planning consultant for the Advanced Water Treatment Facility.

Pure Water Southern California aims to produce up to 150 million gallons (568 million litres) of water per day, providing a resilient local supply of purified water for up to 15 million people as one of the largest water reuse programs in the world.
