Exploring the effects of water reuse

As more and more communities turn to water reuse, it becomes increasingly important to understand the effects of recycled water. In particular, Florida relies heavily on reused wastewater, but its Water Quality Assessment Report showed a nutrient impairment in a large portion of its waters.

To study the problem, the WateReuse Research Foundation, now part of the Water Environment & Reuse Foundation, created a Tailored Collaboration grant to study water reuse. Stantec received the grant to partner with several Florida utilities and management agencies.

From this data, researchers identified the artificial sweetener sucralose (e.g., Splenda), among other compounds, as markers unique to wastewater sources. These findings have steadily grown in significance over the years. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and several utilities have started using sucralose as a marker in various studies, and this method is gaining increased acceptance nationwide.

Since then, Stantec was awarded a follow-up study to continue making insights into water reuse and sharing our results with the community.
