Rian Burger returns to Stantec’s airports practice

Industry veteran brings expertise in terminal design and operational innovation

10/28/2019 TORONTO, ON TSX,NYSE:STN

We are pleased to announce that Architect Rian Burger has rejoined Stantec as a senior principal in our global airport practice. Based in Stantec’s Toronto-Wellington office, Rian brings more than 30 years of industry experience, along with a keen understanding of the airport business and a creative approach to solving operational challenges faced by airport operators.

“We’re delighted to welcome Rian back to Stantec and we look forward to his leadership of our Airport team in the Greater Toronto region,” says Cecilia Einarson, Stantec’s sector leader for airport terminal projects. “Within a few days of rejoining us, Rian was instrumental in helping our Denver office win the redevelopment of the Denver Airport Great Hall, so we are off to a great start!”

Rian’s previous airport projects include two at Toronto Pearson International Airport – the Terminal 1 Redevelopment and Expansion Program, and the Terminal 3 Enhancement Program. He also designed the 18-gate Edmonton International Airport expansion, worked on numerous capacity enhancement projects at Vancouver International Airport, and spearheaded the programming and design of the Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport Terminal 2 in Santiago, Chile.

“I’m thrilled to rejoin Stantec and work with this unique and diverse team of world class professionals – people you can relate to and who understand your business,” says Rian. “I’m excited about all of the opportunities that new technology has created for airport design – and it’s great to see airports leading the way in tech, especially in terms of the Internet of Things and biometrics. Expect to see a steady reduction in the number and severity of checks encountered between curb and gate. Airports are getting smarter and faster, rather than bigger.”

An established industry leader, Rian has served on the Airport Council International-North America's Operations and Technical Affairs Committee. He has also been published in several industry outlets, including Journal of Airport Management, Area Development, Airports International, and Green Building and Design.
