09/27/2019 EDMONTON, AB TSX,NYSE:STN

Global design firm Stantec is a four-time winner at the 8th annual IIDA Healthcare Design Awards. Recognized for outstanding originality and excellence in the design and furnishings of interior healthcare spaces, Stantec’s winning projects include the New York Proton Therapy Center, Almost Home Kids at OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois, and double winner SickKids WAV PlayPark.

The New York Proton Therapy Center, located in New York, New York, was honored in the Ambulatory – Specialty Clinic category. The first facility of its kind in the state, this state-of-the-art, 135,000 square foot facility houses four treatment rooms and one research room. The three-story center, expected to provide advanced cancer care to 1,400 patients annually, also serves as the anchor of a mixed-use project on East 125th Street that is fueling urban renewal in East Harlem.

Almost Home Kids at OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois in Peoria, Illinois earned top honors in the Hospitals – Pediatric category. AHK provides transitional care in a home-like setting to children with complex health needs. The comforting design of this 22,000 square foot home includes a central lighthouse reflection space, two wings with 12 bedrooms, care team office space, physical therapy room, medication room for educating the family, kitchen and great room for communal activities, central outdoor courtyard respite space, and screened porch.

SickKids WAV PlayPark in Toronto, Ontario took home awards in both the Hospitals – Pediatric and Transformation and Innovation categories. The PlayPark is a beloved, volunteer-run space for the siblings of young patients who are at the hospital for treatment. The design promotes relaxation, creativity, exploration, and make believe. With zones inspired by nature, the space is subdivided into landscape features including a lake, hill, cave, meadow, forest, and canyon. A central desk overlooks all the spaces, with the design maximizing openness, interconnectivity, and safety.

“Our design team’s patient-first mindset is essential in creating welcoming and comfortable spaces for all our healthcare projects,” said Brenda Bush-Moline, healthcare discipline leader for Stantec. “We are honored to have three of our projects recognized by IIDA.”

Projects were reviewed by a jury of design professionals focused on healthcare spaces. Winning projects will be featured in the December issue of Healthcare Design magazine and honored at a’ reception at IIDA Headquarters in Chicago on November 11, 2019.
