Stantec’s Urban Places team to lead master plan for Montreal’s “Royal Vic”
Plan will breathe new life into the city’s beloved Royal Victoria Hospital Campus

Stantec’s Urban Places team has been selected by Société québécoise des infrastructures (SQI) to lead a master plan for the renewal of Montreal’s Royal Victoria Hospital site, one of the largest planning projects in the city. The “Royal Vic,” part of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), has been a pillar of the community, tending to Montreal’s sick and wounded for more than 100 years. MUHC relocated in 2015 to a new location in Montreal and, today the Royal Vic site is largely unused. But Stantec’s designers will breathe new life into the site.
“Our goal is to ensure respectful, yet dynamic master plan for the Royal Vic,” says Steve Potvin, Stantec’s Urban Places Quebec Lead. “Our team of experts will carefully consider the past, present, and future of the site in our design.”
McGill University envisions repurposing some of the buildings at Royal Vic to accommodate new spaces for teaching and research. In addition, the site could incorporate future complementary uses that welcome the public and provide improved access to the historic Mount Royal Park – a premier greenspace central to life in the city.
“The Royal Vic site is very complex,” says Steve. “So, the restoration and reimagining of these spaces will require a holistic view – from engineering, to forward-thinking urban design, to historic landscape design.”
Stantec’s design team will work with multiple stakeholders, including SQI, McGill University, Ville de Montréal and Les amis de la montagne, to ensure a holistic approach in determining the best use for the site. The cross-disciplinary team will include urban planners, architects, landscape architects, engineers, and biologists.
