Guy Déry, Eng., Senior Director – Major Transit Projects at Stantec, has received an Honoris Genius Award of Excellence from the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) for his significant contribution to the Montreal subway’s AZUR cars project for the Montreal Transit Corporation (STM). The award was handed out at the Excellence in Engineering Gala held on November 25, 2020, marking the OIQ’s 100th anniversary.

Given out annually, the OIQ’s awards and distinctions are aimed at publicizing major Quebec engineering accomplishments, highlighting models of inspiration for both the profession and the general public, and showcasing Quebec engineers who accomplish feats of engineering and demonstrate professional excellence.

“Congratulations to Guy Déry on receiving this prestigious award, which reflects this exceptional engineer’s talent and capacity for innovation,” said Isabelle Jodoin, Stantec’s Senior Vice President – Quebec. “Throughout this massive undertaking, he combined rigour, leadership and passion to support our client in the successful delivery of this high-profile project to modernize Montreal’s public transit system. We are very fortunate to have his expertise and commitment on our team.”

An electrical engineer by training, Guy has 35 years of experience in consulting engineering and the public transit sector. He played a key role in the acquisition and commissioning of the new AZUR cars for Montreal’s subway, intended to gradually replace the network’s original cars dating back to 1966. As the lead engineer in the consortium providing the STM with engineering and project management expertise, Guy managed all engineering activities, including coordination of multiple design reviews, project reviews and train qualification processes to ensure the product’s compliance with STM requirements. He also worked with STM’s internal maintenance, operations and engineering teams during the transition to the new state-of-the-art trains and helped mobilize over 200 resources working out of a dedicated project office for the past 10 years.

On this project, Stantec provided engineering and project management services, more specifically for the complementary development of the infrastructure necessary to integrate the new cars into the existing subway system. Since 2016, commuters have enjoyed the benefits of an ultra-modern, environmentally friendly and comfortable AZUR subway system that meets the highest industry standards. Today, 60 AZUR cars are in service.
