District Energy and Cogeneration Study and Business Case - NAIT

Powering a major campus expansion

Performing a screening study and preliminary business case for integrating combined heat and power (CHP) technology at NAIT

The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) is an educational institution in Edmonton, Alberta that’s located on the perimeter of the Blatchford Redevelopment—a new sustainable urban community planned for 30,000 residents, business, and commercial development. The campus was planning for a significant expansion, so NAIT brought on our team to determine feasibility.

NAIT retained our team to perform a screening study and preliminary business case for integrating combined heat and power (CHP) technology with the existing campus district energy system. We also had to examine expanding this CHP/district energy system to provide energy to the nascent Blatchford Redevelopment—which debated seeking a private third-party or keeping it within NAIT ownership.

NAIT is now pursuing project funding for the most attractive of the project options, and we’re continuing to provide relevant advice regarding its central energy systems. Another major consideration? The potential for future interaction with the City of Edmonton’s planned carbon-neutral Blatchford Distributed Energy Sharing System (DESS).
