Providing a safe, dedicated bike route east-west through Midtown Atlanta

Imagine getting to work faster, your child biking to school safely, and enjoying urban living without the use of your car. This is now a reality with the expansion of Atlanta’s first cycle track project in Midtown.

Moving toward its stated goal of doubling the percentage of commuters who bike to work, the City of Atlanta designated 10th Street as a high-priority corridor for bike lane infrastructure. Commuters can now safely bike the entire length of 10th Street between Monroe Drive and Piedmont Avenue on the barrier-separated, two-way cycle track.

Connecting the dots between Midtown’s core and the BeltLine, the new facility includes multiple access points from 10th Street into Piedmont Park, passing shops, restaurants, two schools, and numerous homes.

To address safety concerns and build upon logical nodes of activity, our team installed a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (or, warning signal) at a key intersection, constructed concrete bulbouts that doubled as locations for bicycle racks, and implemented wayfinding and directional signage for easier navigation. The project has encouraged bicycling as an alternative to cars, a win-win for Atlanta’s bustling transportation community.
