Constructing a mandated runway safety area with no adverse impact to surrounding wetlands
Our involvement on the Belfast Municipal Airport Runway 15-33 reconstruction project required the collaboration between civil, electrical, and environmental engineers. Together, we designed and provided construction inspection services for reconstruction of this 4,000 foot runway.
The project included pavement reclamation, drainage improvements, obstruction removal, and design and construction of a new airport access road. In addition, we relocated the airport administration building and the existing runway 150 feet to the south. The application of topsoil, seed, and mulch was also required, along with the application of new pavement markings.
Our team of electrical engineers designed and oversaw construction of new runway and taxiway edge lighting, runway obstruction lighting, a new airport electrical vault, and navigational aids. As well, our environmental staff prepared an assessment to address wetland impacts associated with obstruction removal and the access road construction. With permit coordination with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Stantec oversaw nine acres of plant removal and 3,000 square feet of fill within environmentally sensitive wetlands.
