Increasing safety in a roundabout way

Located on the southeast coast of Florida, the Town of Cutler Bay is home to over 40,000 people. We had previously helped the Town improve its beloved Old Cutler Road. So, when they wanted to enhance Caribbean Boulevard between Southwest (SW) 106 Court to SW 184th Street, they came to our Community Development team for assistance.

As the prime consultant for this project, we provided drainage analysis and stormwater design, traffic engineering, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramp design and installation, and other related services. From our drainage analysis, we determined that the corridor had insufficient stormwater and green infrastructure. This meant that there were no curbs and gutters, limited landscaping, unpaved, relatively flat profile grading, and inadequate drainage systems. We developed a plan to address these issues as well environmental concerns raised by Miami-Dade County.

Since Caribbean Boulevard is primarily a residential road, the Town wanted to implement traffic calming and other safety measures. We designed roundabouts, landscape medians, and traffic calming splitter islands where plausible. Additionally, we conducted a traffic operational and capacity analysis study for the corridor, which included traffic data collection and field inventory of existing conditions, evaluation of existing signal operations and timings, and development of optimal signal timing parameters. We also provided engineering design services for the second phase of improvements between SW 87th Avenue to SW 184th Street, which are currently under design and slated for construction by the end of 2025.

As the improvements finish, travelers along Caribbean Boulevard will enjoy increasingly safer passage as they head home or to destinations beyond.
