Helping Minot keep up with the demands of a rapidly expanding population
Several years of explosive growth had Minot, a commercial hub for Western North Dakota, bursting at its seams. The city realized it needed to reimagine its future and plan for growth. It sought an experienced planning firm and chose Stantec to help them update their comprehensive plan.
The existing plan, developed in the late 1990s, had not anticipated the economic pressures of the North Dakota oil boom. Nor could it have predicted the 2011 floods that impacted a quarter of the city’s housing stock.
First, we worked with a local steering committee and numerous community stakeholders to understand key issues. We blended this with the results of our background research to organize these issues around five key elements for Minot’s future: a revitalized downtown; greenway connections; compact, orderly development; housing opportunities; and transportation improvements. The result was a shared vision for the future. Then, we wove the five key elements into effective land use and staging plans to help Minot carefully respond to explosive growth.
Minot is moving forward, improving infrastructure, building affordable housing, and revitalizing neighborhoods. Their vision is becoming reality.
