Assessing and treating contaminants at a chromium plating building

Southern California: sun, surf, and contaminants? Not if our engineers have anything to say about it!

At a chromium plating building our team prepared the final interim measures work plan to address hexavalent chromium, perchlorate, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) in saturated soil and groundwater. To solve the problem, and prevent migration onto the neighboring property and into their proposed groundwater VOC treatment, we evaluated a range of interim measures. We think if something’s worth doing it’s worth doing right, which means planning for success from the very beginning. Based on a six month pilot study, we proposed a full scale implementation of the in-situ treatment using a network of injection wells. We’ve implemented treatment at 41 wells, ranging from 10 to 30 feet in depth, and another 12 wells over 60 feet deep.

We’re assessing the effectiveness of our efforts by sampling 16 shallow and 11 deep monitoring wells. We are currently preparing an interim measures installation and implementation report to address any necessary contingency procedures in the event that significant changes or trends in the concentrations or migration patterns of VOCs are observed.
