Environmental DNA Services - Stibnite Gold Project

Using eDNA methods to detect presence of sensitive species in headwater streams

  • Stibnite, Idaho

    Stibnite, Idaho

We helped identify species presence in small, headwater streams where other sampling methods were not always feasible.

The Stibnite Gold Project is a large, proposed gold mining project that is currently in the permitting phase. Our team has been providing ongoing water and environmental services to Midas Gold for the Golden Meadows Project, later renamed the Stibnite Gold Project since 2011.

We monitor the stream habitat and biology as well as the aquatic ecosystem functionality. Because many of the headwater streams that may be affected by the project have very low flow, high gradients, and are difficult to test, we established an environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling program to determine the presence of important species. An eDNA sampling program looks for trace evidence of an organism in waterways rather than relying on a visual identification.

The results of this sampling effort will be used to determine potential project impacts, any need for mitigation, and the potential need for fish passage. We teamed with the Cramer Fish Sciences Genidaqs Molecular Biology and Genetics Lab to determine DNA presence at each survey site.

This contract includes stream habitat monitoring, macroinvertebrate monitoring, and fisheries monitoring through multiple sample methods.
