Optimizing form and function while serving as a thread that connects the local community
Sarasota County recognized the need for an additional north-south corridor to accommodate ever increasing traffic. The selected route meant constructing a roadway through established neighborhoods with adjoining schools, parks, and businesses. Stantec worked closely with the county’s staff and offered creative approaches, such as variable width medians, burying power lines, and the use of boardwalks to successfully implement a project design that satisfied stakeholders.
Through the use of creative lane and median configuration and boardwalks, the design saved 75 percent of the existing high value trees within the existing right-of-way. Bioretention areas were enhanced with bioswales, rain gardens and median areas, creating one of the area’s most effective water quality treatment systems. Six roundabouts addressed the increased traffic challenge by providing traffic calming along the corridor. Ultimately, we accomplished our goal of designing a facility that optimizes form and function while serving as a thread that connects the local community. This project was recognized by the Florida Chapter of the American Public Works Association as Project of the Year with Stantec being named Transportation Consultant of the Year.
