Transforming a dated hotel into a unique, activated environment

The space hadn’t been renovated since 2008, and the Hyatt Regency Schaumburg wanted an urban aesthetic in their non-descript suburban atrium hotel. The austere masonry structure called for something special—a bold gesture to significantly transform the interiors and establish a new identity for the hotel.

The architectural solution? A floating cube structure that would create interest within the atrium space but also effectively screen the guestroom windows above. The three-story, bronze-finished framework (with translucent poly-core fins) creates a textured façade that reflects light in a dynamic, playful manner. That’s wow factor—and it also provides a much-needed sense of intimacy within the large atrium.

Add in a central communal table surrounded by comfortable lounge groupings, and we’ve anchored the Lobby Lounge. Guests flow in and out of the adjacent food and beverage areas, which offer intimate spaces for work or gathering.

The reimagined atrium features classic modern finishes including subtle grey tones, white Carrara marble, and warm walnut millwork, which combine to lend the space an upscale, timeless appeal.
