Sustainability and local environment shine through in landscape design
You know those creative designs across highway bridges or along the interstate that make driving a little less boring? We do that. And when the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) wanted to liven up an otherwise dull stretch of I-15 south heading into Las Vegas, they reached out to us.
We provided landscape architecture services for this NDOT project, which involved six miles of roadway and 23 bridges from the Blue Diamond interchange to the Tropicana interchange in Las Vegas. The project’s “nature” theme spotlights the diverse ecosystem of southern Nevada, reminding us to recognize our natural residents as a precious asset. Along the stretch of highway, you’ll find steel sculptures that feature desert bighorn sheep, coyotes, wild horses, burros, desert hawks, and a variety of reptiles. To add to the nature theme, the actual landscape design integrates earth form walls to create rock outcroppings and uses native plants with no irrigation to promote sustainability and reduce maintenance. This stretch of 1-15 is no longer a dull drive.
This fast-tracked, design-build project was the largest NDOT project to date for an urban freeway corridor in Nevada.
