A LEED certified police station to reflect the values of the Kodiak community
The Kodiak Police Station and Jail is a perfect reflection of its community – hard-working and colorful. It’s an essential government building that doesn’t look like a boring government building. And it is the first LEED Certified building on Kodiak Island.
The building’s look is inspired by coastal Alaska including gray mortarless masonry that depicts the island’s geology. The earthtones are juxtaposed with bright “safety” colors and architectural styles prevalent in Kodiak Harbor, one of the nation’s busiest fishing ports. Through the creative use of translucent walls, ceilings, and clerestory windows, interior spaces that are ordinarily windowless have access to daylight – critical during the dark Alaska winters.
There is complete separation between the major functions of the facility. The jail serves the entire island and includes men’s and women’s detention areas with a capacity of 24. A separate public lobby is used for visitors to the jail, as well as booking areas, sally port, and central jail control/supervisor spaces.
