Engineering a roadway system to promote the highest quality of life in Georgia

Milton’s motto is “the highest quality of life in Georgia.” As their on-call engineer, we’re designing a roadway system that meets that standard. We’ve been responsible for alignment improvements and adding turn lanes, curb and gutter, sidewalks, and improved drainage systems throughout the city.

At Birmingham Highway and Providence Road, the existing intersection didn’t comply with Department of Transportation policy, and a lack of dedicated turn lanes increased congestion. We designed the city’s first roundabout and realigned Providence Road to improve capacity, sight distance, and safety.

During peak hours, the intersection at Crabapple and Birmingham Highway was congested, and the lack of left turn lanes led people to bypass the intersection altogether. With added turn lanes and two single-lane roundabouts at two intersections, our designs improved the typical sections and alignment of existing local roads.

When it came to Hopewell Road and Cogburn Road—a four-way stop with no dedicated turn lanes—we designed a single-lane roundabout. This option was safer and less costly than a signalized intersection. We also found space for a multi-use trail.

With all of these improvements, travel in Milton is safer and more convenient.
