Twelve miles of improvements in the rear-view mirror
Highway 23 provides a vital link from Watford City and North Dakota’s oil fields to points east including the important commercial center of Minot. Recognizing the need for road repair and improved safety, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) asked us to handle construction administration for the reconstruction of a 12-mile segment of road—a $46 million project.
The reconstruction called for roadway widening, full-depth reclamation, and a cement-treated base. The stretch of road skimmed several hills to provide a consistent travel speed and adequate sight distances. Our team also constructed two bridges, four box culverts, and a roundabout. The 248-foot-diameter Portland cement concrete roundabout, designed to handle oilfield trucks, replaced a blind crossing intersection controlled by stop signs.
Acting on NDDOT’s behalf, our services included weekly meetings, contract administration, field inspection and survey, materials testing coordination, change orders, pay estimates, and CARS records system administration. Our surveyors provided construction staking and final survey/cross sections for the final as-built drawings.
