Ensuring safe rail transit for 20,000 route miles of train track
Norfolk Southern’s rail network encompasses about 20,000 route miles (32,000 kilometres) of track in 22 states and the District of Columbia and services every major container port in the Eastern United States.
As one of Norfolk Southern’s on-call consultants, we help keep the extensive rail network and facilities safe and operational by providing general engineering and design services under two task order contracts—one with the Design and Construction Department and one with the Public Improvements Group within the Bridges and Structures Department.
Task order services could include trackwork/design, surveying, engineering, plan and specification development, construction management, and environmental permitting, planning, and mitigation management.
One task order assignment involved track layout design to support a sand transload facility in Streator, Illinois. We were assigned to survey and design a drainage system that would support an intermodal facility expansion.
