When a small city is ready to grow, it takes a good plan to get it right
How do you connect a neglected riverfront to a rapidly suburbanizing community? That was the City’s challenge—our goal was to deliver that for them and to create a visionary yet practical ten-year comprehensive plan to help guide annual budgeting, capital programming, city operations, and development decisions for this growing South Carolina riverfront community of 21,000.
The plan addresses strategies for sustainable economic growth; efficient, high quality services; stable, diverse, and walkable neighborhoods; transportation that facilitates mobility and activity; robust parks, recreation, and a greenway network; a vibrant downtown, and most importantly, strong connections to the riverfront.
We used a week-long public design charrette to facilitate engagement and develop a clear set of priorities. The final document addresses all of the mandated requirements of the state process with a unique approach that focuses on implementing bold ideas—both small and large—with walkability at the core of every decision.
