Designing a community that residents can enjoy and feel safe in

When the Town of Cutler Bay needed to improve the historic Old Cutler Road between SW 97th Avenue and SW 87th Avenue, they called on us to help. Cutler wanted to create a functional, attractive, and pedestrian-friendly neighborhood that promotes safety and walkability. And our final design of the award-winning project successfully accomplished these goals.

Our team provided a design solution that included two traffic-calming circles, decorative street lighting and signals, a new continuous drainage system, new sidewalks, a shared-use path, medians and crosswalks, irrigation, and several site amenities. To create a consistent and inviting community aesthetic, we designed new bus shelters, site furniture, a park area with rare native plant species, state historic designation markers, and an electronic message board. This was all done within the existing footprint of the roadway.

Public input was very important to the success of this project, so we conducted on-site meetings with the neighbors, interviewed key property and business owners, developed design workshops, and hosted open houses to involve the local community. Now, this roadway combines functionality and safety with the atmosphere of an old-school Miami country road. The project won the 2014 Project of the Year Award from the Cuban American Association of Civil Engineers.
