Reviving a center for social, cultural, and economic activity in Florida

When we think about a community’s main street, we picture the community’s heart—a center for social, cultural, and economic activity. Old San Carlos Boulevard carried this image for many years and was considered the Gateway to Fort Myers Beach—that is, until the construction of a new bridge redirected traffic and ultimately led to the decline of Old San Carlos Boulevard. When the Town eventually adopted a new comprehensive plan for revitalization, this once spirited area was at the top of the list.

When we consider what makes a community thrive, we see designs that create destinations. Our team of planners, landscape architects, and engineers knew a conventional roadway wasn’t the answer to creating this new urban retreat. What we needed was a holistic design that met the needs of pedestrians and businesses alike. This meant improving pedestrian access with concrete sidewalks and patterned crosswalks; providing easy access to business with parallel on-street parking; and enhancing aesthetics and overall enjoyment with resurfaced roads, new shade trees, streetlights, and street furniture.

Our approach helped create a streetscape environment that reflects the distinctive character of a vibrant seaside destination and serves as the foundation for ongoing architectural revival and economic redevelopment of the area.
