Updating water treatment for the 21st century
The Truckee Meadows Water Reclamation Facility treats wastewater for approximately 80% of the Reno, Nevada area, discharging treated water into the Sierra-fed Truckee River.
Constructed in 1964, the original plant had comminutors—kind of glorified garbage disposals that chopped up solids before sending them through the treatment process. Later, mechanical screens replaced these units to remove debris from the water. The problem with these screens was that the captured solids had to be manually lifted 35 feet to the surface using a crane for waste to be dumped—not exactly efficient.
The facility was in dire need of an update. We evaluated replacement alternatives for these worn out and outdated screens, recommending the installation of two 47-foot long inclined front-cleaned screens to carry the solids 40 feet up to the surface and dispose of the debris in a garbage bin. Our solution eliminated the need for workers to handle the wastewater solids.
An unintended test came shortly after installation when a six-foot-long piece of eight-inch diameter PVC pipe came through the sewer and was captured by the screens. The client’s maintenance personnel were amazed that the screens caught the pipe section, and they removed it with only minimal superficial damage.
