State-of-the-art laboratories and student collaboration areas increase energy efficiency by 30-percent, breathing life into an outdated facility

Due to expanded job growth in the STEM sector and growth in academic enrollment, the University of Michigan Dearborn worked with us to design major upgrades to its nearly 60-year-old science building and bring its programming into the 21st century.

Designed to LEED-Silver standards, this $51 million project consisted of stripping down the structure to its frame and adding approximately 20,000 square feet to accommodate a new elevator, loading dock core, mechanical penthouse and 40 state-of-the-art laboratory spaces for the Department of Natural Sciences. The building maximizes energy efficiency and makes the most out of renewable, sustainable resources. A light well was installed in the centrally located student collaboration area bringing natural light into the facility from top to bottom. New energy-efficient enclosures and mechanical/electrical systems bring the buildings energy consumption 30 percent below ASHRAE standards.

Funded in part by a Michigan capital outlay of $30 million, the newly-named Natural Science Building proves to be a draw to the university and the city of Dearborn itself.
