Designing a highly-flexible space to accommodate a variety of learning styles at the University of Notre Dame
The University of Notre Dame envisioned the Mendoza College of Business as a facility that would produce learners and thinkers, rather than just ‘good workers’. To achieve this, the college believed it had to move away from centralized lectures and towards a knowledge-based, group-learning format that catalyzes complex problem-solving techniques through creative projects, social learning, and group dynamics.
Our team was brought on to design Giovanni Commons as a center allowing complete customization of the learning process. Moveable tables, chairs, white boards, and technology stations allow space to be reconfigured to accommodate different academic environments, suitable for private study by individuals or learning sessions involving large collaborative groups.
This project supports a variety of learning styles and challenges students and faculty to explore new ideas that emerge through collaboration. With this facility, the University of Notre Dame supports progressive modes of education through Giovanini Commons' thoughtful and highly-flexible space design.
