Washington Street Adaptive Traffic Control Installation

Reducing vehicle queues and signal maintenance costs

Innovative traffic signal control software can improve intersection performance

The City of Woburn’s Washington Street is parallel to Interstate 93 and serves as an alternative route when the interstate is congested. Unfortunately, congestion on the interstate is a regular occurrence and the diverted traffic through the closely-spaced Salem and Cedar Street intersections on Washington Street quickly overwhelmed the pre-programmed traffic signals.

Our solution? We proposed and helped install an adaptive traffic signal control system that automatically adjusts signal timing in response to real-time measurements of traffic demands. The new system has helped eliminate gridlock conditions when vehicle queues from one intersection would block traffic flow at the adjacent intersection.

With this system in place, commuters in Woburn can drive easier. Plus, the system also relieves City staff of the need to continually monitor traffic flows and manually update signal timings.
