City of Fredericton - Urban Forest Management Strategy
The City of Fredericton values their extensive urban forests as a defining feature of the city and a cornerstone of residents’ quality of life. To balance forest stewardship with rapid population growth and urban densification, the City retained our team to develop an urban forest management strategy (UFMS) that will guide the protection, management, and growth of the urban forest over the next 25 years. The vision for this strategy is to sustain a biodiverse urban forest throughout the area for a resilient environment and healthy people.
Our team combined advanced urban forestry and geographic information system (GIS) analysis with a structured engagement process to provide practical, measurable recommendations with broad internal and community support. We worked closely with City departments and Sitansisk, along with advisory groups, city council, stewardship organizations, and the public. Engagement activities—including an open house, interactive story map, and community pop‑ups—enabled residents and interested parties to directly shape the future of Fredericton’s urban forest.
Using this input, we developed a proactive, long‑term UFMS with clear short-, medium-, and long‑term goals. Recommendations included updating landscaping standards, shifting policies to prioritize tree protection over removal compensation, planting a fruit forest, strengthening outreach and partnerships, maintaining a public education program, and improving operational practices. The UFMS assigns coordinated implementation responsibilities across City departments, reinforcing accountability.
Built on a strong technical foundation, the UFMS translates complex data into clear, actionable direction. By integrating technical analysis, interdepartmental coordination, and public engagement, the UFMS positions the City to manage their urban forest sustainably, delivering lasting environmental, social, and community benefits for generations. Over time, the plan will help protect canopy cover, strengthen community stewardship, and support a healthier, more resilient city.
