Nature-based protections against storm surges

When Superstorm Sandy pummeled the East coast in 2012, it caused over a hundred deaths and widespread property destruction totaling over $70 billion.

On the 10th anniversary of Sandy, Donna Walcavage, FASLA, principal at Stantec, along with Adrian Smith, team leader, Staten Island capital projects, NYC Parks and Pippa Brashear, ASLA, principal at SCAPE Landscape Architecture, explain how designing with nature can lead to more resilient shoreline communities. During Climate Week NYC, they walked an online crowd of hundreds through Living Breakwaters and its companion project on land — the Tottenville Shoreline Protection Project.
