Smart planning and sensitive design elevates parking structure to express civic context
The community of Arvada, Colorado sought more than just your average parking garage. They wanted a modern, sustainable transit facility that could serve as a central hub for bus, cab, or rail. Now with this combination parking structure and RTD bus transfer facility located on the edge of historic Olde Town Arvada, the City of Arvada has just that.
Beginning in 2014, our multidisciplinary team of designers provided the architectural, urban design, and master planning services. The new, sustainable structure features a number of environmentally-minded initiatives, including natural ventilation and daylighting strategies, regionally-appropriate landscaping that becomes a part of the building’s exterior aesthetic and the use of sustainable, long-lasting materials.
With a capacity for 660 cars, the facility is a prime transfer point for the local bus route while also serving as a connection to a new commuter rail stop via a new pedestrian bridge—which elegantly-adds to the Arvada skyline by framing the view of the City’s famous water tower. Moreover, the top parking deck is made to be separated for community functions such as the local farmer’s market and occasional craft fares.
Arvada’s new facility is a model for how smart planning and sensitive design can elevate a parking structure to become a contextual, civic expression and the gateway to a proud new era for a community ready for its’ future as it honors its history.
